If you want to become a musician for fun, for profit or for any other reason, there is no escaping the fact that a little bit of money will need to be spent. Time and money are just two of the investments you will need to make to do it properly, and it is fairly important to get value for money in the early stages. Being able to learn the guitar means knowing how good you sound, and your first guitar may not need to be expensive and classic – but it does need to be of a sufficient quality to sound like a guitar. Otherwise you could be extremely naturally talented and not know it.

It is possible to find decent second-hand guitars, and this may be your best option as a learner. They will occasionally be passed on by guitarists who have learned the important tricks, and need to add something to their sound that can only be achieved with a more expensive guitar. If you take this approach, it may be worth asking to hear them play – if they sound good on the instrument, then so can you with enough practice. Once you have your guitar you’ll need to move on to other useful items. For example, if you are going electric, you’ll need a decent amp – otherwise you’re not going to hear yourself play.

The best bet is to ask around in music shops and – on occasion – ask the person who is selling you the guitar. If they want to keep their amp – which is highly possible – then they may well know somewhere good to buy one. After all, they bought their own.

Any long-time guitarist will tell you, as you are starting out as a beginner, that the bits you have to look out for are the ones you wouldn’t predict. You’ll expect to make mistakes as you get used to the instrument, and you’ll expect to fall out with loved ones over your practising in the house. What you won’t expect are the bizarre little side-effects which befall most guitarists – but don’t much get talked about because they aren’t part of the glamorous image of guitar heroes. These are things that will genuinely surprise you. But when you think about them, they are perfectly logical.

For starters, you will be shocked at just how hard the skin on your hands, particularly your fingertips, will become. Even if you use a plectrum to pluck the strings, you will find that the fingerprints start to wear away as the thick skin comes into contact with the harsh strings on the instrument. And then there is what happens to your fingernails. There are few guitarists who have been playing for any amount of time that haven’t lost a fingernail or two. Some will certainly split, and one or two will blacken. Your best bet is to invest in some gloves for when you aren’t playing.

If you didn’t already have some sweet biceps, that’s another thing to look out for. When you are carrying a guitar around everywhere with you, and add to that an amp, then you will get a workout even if you don’t like the gym. You may not end up looking like an Olympic wrestler, but there will be a marked increase in definition in your muscles. Unless you get some roadies, of course.

Some of the most proficient guitarists in the world are not known to many people, because their versatility makes them ideal session guitarists or members of touring bands. If you can play the one style, but play it enormously well, then you’re one of life’s band members. But if you can play every style to a level of impressive proficiency, then a session role is something to consider. There will always be a band, in whatever genre, who need a guitarist like you.

The guitar has popped up in all kinds of music over the years. Of course it has a place in punk music, although there are many who would argue that anyone could be the guitarist in a punk band. A solo rock singer will need session musicians to play their songs when they go on tour, while the increasing number of dance acts who prefer to put on a live show rather than do a glorified DJ set means that there is a challenge for session musicians – you may well know how to play the entire back catalogue of Bryan Adams, but the skeletal guitar lines that pop up in a lot of drum ‘n’ bass music are a different kettle of fish.

The different genres that use the guitar all use it differently – some would compare the styles to different tools. A punk guitar style will be similar to using a hammer, and a rock guitarist will work more with a saw. The more intricate and fragile playing which is, strangely, familiar to both folk and dance music, is more like a paintbrush. It’s all the same instrument though – a wonderfully versatile one.

Anyone Can Play Guitar

Before they became one of the most famous bands in the world, Radiohead had a debut album called “Pablo Honey”. As well as the multi-million selling single “Creep”, the album featured a song called “Anyone Can Play Guitar” – something that a lot of frustrated musicians have since found to be slightly inaccurate. Much as we try, there are some of us who feel that the likelihood of us ever managing to get something resembling a tune out of a musical instrument is at best limited. Given the iconic nature of the guitar, this can be frustrating.

There can be very few of us who do not love music. Whether or not we can play, we tend to have an ear for things we like, and even in the recent global recession record and MP3 sales were barely harmed – because people like to have music even when there is no prospect of spending big on other purchases. If you need to stay at home more, then you may as well have a good soundtrack for it. But what are the chances of providing your own soundtrack to all of this? Well, a bit of perseverance and the ability to think outside the box may well provide you with the opportunity.

Maybe not everyone can play guitar. But if you have tried a few times and been met with noises that sound unhealthy, that doesn’t mean you have no ability. All it means is that you need to refine your learning process.

There are some things at which some people find out they are gifted without having to try a great deal. Famously, athletic ability is one of those things that shows early – a child showing the ability to run faster or for longer than the others may be destined for a future athletics career. Musical ability also falls into this category. Some of us can pick up a guitar and put together a reasonable tune without having to concentrate too hard or put in too much effort. It is quite a pleasant thing to discover – the ability to make music is one that is keenly sought-after – but it doesn’t mean you are all the way there.

Remember, there is a world of difference between being able to play the guitar well and being able to create impressive music. Some people can play cover versions of famous songs perfectly, but when it comes to thinking outside the box and creating something new, it becomes a whole new kettle of fish. It is therefore not wise to rest on your laurels. While true creativity cannot be learned it can be honed, and most of us have some creative ability in us somewhere. Release that and master it, and you can be on a roll towards creating something special.

There are so many people who found out early on that they were talented, and failed to realize that this was not the green light to lucrative success they thought it was. Natural talent plus hard work can make you really gifted – but a dash of humility is required to ensure that the two meet.

Do You Want To Learn And Master Guitar?

New to guitar?  This article will help you to develop better guitar playing skills.

Obtain a Good Teacher!  There is no replacement for a skilled guitar teacher.  You can purchase all the books and videos you want, but to really be a skilled guitarist, it is crucial to study from a professional.  A qualified guitar teacher has the experience and wisdom needed to teach you how to master the guitar.  Books, videos, and the Internet, lack information and advice.  A good teacher will correct your mistakes if you are doing something not right to free you from bad habits or techniques, and will furthermore encourage you when you are doing a fine job.

Do not be discouraged!  The initial time playing any instrument can be overwhelming, and you could tell yourself that this is merely too hard to continue.  We all have to study from step one, and everybody has been in the same boat! Everything takes practice, and it is a requirement to be uncomplaining with yourself.  Give yourself a pep talk everyday, saying these words aloud “I can do this, and it will be simple for me.”  The motivation, and words of encouragement to yourself will hurry up the process to make things alot easier for everything in life that you wish for, or try to accomplish.

Practice everyday!  You will become more familiar with your instrument after you take the time to practice everyday.  This will get so simple for you over time with your devotion to learn.  Try to free up at least 20 minutes of time each day to practice your guitar.  Find a time and place where you will not be interrupted.  Disruption can prevent your concentration and snap a good rhythm.  Warm hands, and stretch fingers before playing. Ask your teacher for the best practice exercises that are correct for your style of play.  Create a calendar of helpful practice sessions.
The duration of your practice is not necessarily the most crucial.  The quality of the practice is what really counts and matters the most!   Make sure your teacher is giving a well rounded method, since this helps to obtain the most out of your practice sessions.

Slow Down!  Many brand new guitarists rush through a song in the beginning, trying to play exactly like the radio. 
Before touching anything accurately, you should learn to take things gradually, and be able to play well at a much slower rate.  You can at that time increase the tempo as you progress.

Watch your posture!  Playing the guitar must not be very agonizing and uncomfortable.  If you notice yourself with various aches and pains in the shoulders, neck, back, etc, you probably are not in a helpful position to play. Ask your  teacher to show the best ways, and next do your best to stick to it.  Ask your teacher to correct you after the correct posture fails.

Get a metronome!  A very valuable part of playing the guitar, is the skill to keep good timing.  A tool that will help you to be better with this is called a metronome.  You can buy this at any guitar shop.  When working with a metronome, it is best to start at a slow tempo in the very beginning when you are initially learning how to play. 

Change the strings!  The type of guitar strings that you apply determines the sound quality that your guitar produces. How often do you replace the strings really depends on how often you play.  Professional guitarists can change their strings previous to every gig.  Others who do not play so often, can replace the strings every 2 months or so.  Once again, it really depends on how often you play, and how well you care for your guitar.  Do not wait until your strings break before you change them, and you must replace all channels all together.

Trying new things!  If you are feeling uninspired in the way you are performing, why not try something recent and uncommon?  If you have learned a specific song on the electric guitar, why not try the same song on an acoustic guitar?  If you only play your guitar with a pick, exercise your fingers this next time.  Maybe you solely enjoy playing blues guitar, so why not try a little jazz or classical?
