Get your guitar in tune. Make sure you’re sitting, holding the guitar, and using your pick properly. You’ll have to correct your natural bad habits at first, until it becomes second nature. Play the chromatic scale several times. Try playing it backwards. Play each of the three chords you’ve learned. Check to be sure each note is ringing. If not, find out why, and correct the problem. Try moving from one chord to another. Before switching chords, mentally picture exactly where each finger is going to move in order to play the next chord. Only then should you switch chords.

This is the key to switching chords quickly. If you’re having trouble getting your chords to ring clearly, read this feature on getting your chords to ring clearly. Try playing some, or all of the songs listed above. At first, try only to think of the songs as a way in which to practice playing chords. Don’t get discouraged. This is hard stuff at first, and you’ll probably feel like you can’t do it. You certainly can. Rotate your hand until you are looking at it’s profile, with your thumb’s knuckle facing you.With your other hand, slide your guitar pick between your thumb and index finger. The pick should be approximately located behind the knuckle of the thumb. Be sure the pointed end of the pick is pointing directly away from your fist, and is protruding by about a half an inch. Hold the pick firmly. Position your picking hand over the soundhole of your acoustic guitar, or over the body of your electric guitar. Your picking hand, with thumb knuckle still facing you, should hover over the strings. Do not rest your picking hand on the strings or body of the guitar.

Using your wrist for motion (rather than your entire arm), strike the sixth (lowest) string of your guitar in a downward motion. If the string rattles excessively, try striking the string a bit softer, or with less of the pick surface. Now, pick the sixth string in an upwards motion. Repeat the process several times. Try and minimize motion in your picking hand: one short picking stroke downwards, then one short picking stroke upwards. This process is referred to as “alternate picking”. Try the same exercise on the fifth, fourth, third, second, and first strings.

Tips: Holding the pick in this manner will invariably feel awkward at first. You will initially have to pay special attention to your picking hand whenever you play guitar. Try and create fluidity in your alternate picking. Your downstrokes should sound virtually identical to your upstrokes.

The Chromatic scale

The above diagram may look confusing… fear not, it’s one of the most common methods of explaining notes on the guitar, and is actually quite easy to read. The above represents the neck of the guitar, when looked at head on. The first vertical line on the left of the diagram is the sixth string. The line to the right of that is the fifth string. And so on. The horizontal lines in the diagram represent the frets on the guitar… the space between the top horizontal line, and the one below it is the first fret. The space between that second horizontal line from the top and the one below it is the second fret. And so on. The “0″ above the diagram represents the open string for the string it is positioned above. Finally, the black dots are indicators that these notes should be played.

Start by using your pick to play the open sixth string. Next, take the first finger on your fretting hand (remembering to curl it), and place it on the first fret of the sixth string. Apply a significant amount of downward pressure to the string, and strike the string with your pick.

Now, take your second finger, place it on the second fret of the guitar (you can take your first finger off), and again strike the sixth string with the pick.

Now, repeat the same process on the third fret, using your third finger. And lastly, on the fourth fret, using your fourth finger. There! You’ve played all the notes on the sixth string. Now, move to the fifth string… start by playing the open string, then play frets one, two, three and four.

Repeat this process for each string, altering it only on the third string. On this third string, play only up to the third fret. When you’ve played all the way up to the first string, fourth fret, you’ve completed the exercise.

When playing a note, place your finger at the “top of fret” (the area of the fret farthest away from the headstock). This will produce a clearer sound.Try to use alternate picking while attempting this exercise. If this is overwhelming, try using only downstrokes with your pick, but learn properly once you’ve gotten used to the scale.Once you’ve finished the scale, try playing the scale backwards, by starting at the first string, fourth fret, and playing all notes in exactly the reverse order.

At the point in which the headstock meets the neck of the guitar, you’ll find the “nut”. A nut is simply a small piece of material (plastic, bone, etc.), in which small grooves are carved out to guide the strings up to the tuners.

The neck of the guitar is the area of the instrument you’ll concentrate a great deal on: you’ll put your fingers on various places on the neck, in order to create different notes.

The neck of the guitar adjoins the “body” of the instrument. The body of the guitar will vary greatly from guitar to guitar. Most acoustic and classical guitars have a hollowed out body, and a “sound hole”, designed to project the sound of the guitar. Most electric guitars have a solid body, and thus will not have a sound hole. Electric guitars will instead have “pick-ups” where the soundhole is located. These “pick-ups” are essentially small microphones, which allow the capture the sound of the ringing strings, allowing them to be amplified.

The strings of the guitar run from the tuning pegs, over the nut, down the neck, over the body, over the sound hole (or pick-ups), and are anchored at a piece of hardware attached to the body of the guitar, called a “bridge”.

Is there a riff/solo you can’t play? This happens quite a lot when you hear a new cool song and you tend to blame your cheap guitar or something and throw it away and look at signature models for the whole week and decide you can’t play worth crap.

This guide will help you speed up and play that thing faster than the original.
So lets troubleshoot.

Note: This lesson does not include any tablature of any sort and is just to refine your technique of playing songs. Sometimes, you do the correct thing in practices but not in playing songs.

This lesson is divided into two parts :

I – FOR THE LEFT HAND (when your left hand lets you down)
II – FOR THE RIGHT HAND (when your picking hand lets you down)

Problem 1: Using all fingers

There can’t be a single hero to fight villains for the whole world. Yeah, using all fingers is very important. You might be able to go faster with just three fingers at once, but in the longer run, practicing with all your fingers is very important. There are a lot of chromatic exercises which can help you. You just know where you can use the other finger.

Problem 2: Distance of fingers from the frets

The biggest and most common problem I get to see with guitarists is that they raise their fingers too high from the fretboard when they just used that finger to play a note. Keep all your fingers very close to the fretboard, just enough to get them inaction when required and not to close to mess up or mute the string. This is very important. This is the main problem when you can’t play a riff or lick. So go check yourself.

Also, check the action of your guitar.

Problem 3: Barring a fret in a solo

Yea, this is a bad thing to do. Give your fingers as much freedom they can get. For those of you who don’t get what this means, Barring a fret means sticking your index finger all the way up to two or three strings when playing a solo. This happens a lot while playing the basic pentatonic when the index finger doesn’t have to change positions. Don’t bar the fret and try again. Maybe you can do it this time. Do some stretches and you can hopefully conquer this problem

*Note : Sometimes you have to bar you finger when tapping on multiple strings together.

Exercises:

Stretch your fingers, use all the above methods and keep on practicing the same thing. Boring but gives great results.

If nothing else works, use the good old slow-it-down method. Use all the techniques given above while playing slow and increase your speed by practice.

Problem 1: Picking style

I know this old crap but if you can’t play a thing just use economical picking. No harm is done. Sometimes even alternative can’t even do it. Some songs do use a specific picking pattern but to most listeners, there is no difference. If you don’t know what alternative or economical picking is, it is explained in one good lesson I read. Go check it out.

Problem 2: Right hand movement

OK, when you strum quick patterns which require great right hand stamina, make sure that you are moving just your wrist, not you whole goddamn arm. YEAH, seriously, just move your wrist. Most of these riffs are palm-muted so go rotate your wrist.

Exercises:

Use a metronome and stop at specific beats. If you are playing 32nd or 16th notes at a great speed, its is important that you know when to stop or fret.

Just start a metronome, play sixteenth notes for half a bar then start playing again after a quarter beat.

Thats all, if you don’t find this lesson helpful at all, maybe you are picking a song too fast for you. It is very important that you proceed in a orderly fashion picking easy songs first. You can’t play Malmsteem at your first go, its true, they don’t call them GUITAR GURUS for no reason.

DEFINITION: To “bar” means to press several strings, on a single fret, with only one finger. In these exercises, barre chords will always be indicated by the letter C followed by a Roman numeral to indicate the fret where the “bar” occurs (example: C III represents a bar on the 3rd fret). Please note that all “bars” will be done by the forefinger of the left hand.

If after your first attempts, the sonority of your barre chord is not clear, or is even non-existent, try to correct it as follows:

play as close as possible to the fret use other fingers of the left hand to strengthen your thumb-forefinger grip (for instance, by pressing the middle finger on top of the forefinger)move your forefinger, from top to bottom, in the fret where you press it to obtain a clearer sound.

These exercises are graded by order of difficulty. Start with the first exercise and do not pass onto the next one until you play it correctly (sound, rhythm, etc.). The mastering of the barre chord requires a little perseverance: practice well, but don’t give up!

EXERCISE: Link the barre chord on the 2nd fret with the open string arpeggio. The sequence must be played in a steady beat! This exercise, like the others, must be practiced for one week. It is only at the end of this period that it will start to yield results.

Before you start playing your guitar, you have to tune it. After all, it’s quite impossible to make music with an untuned instrument. In addition, do not hesitate to check the tuning of your guitar if what you play sounds strange.

Tuning your guitar is extremely important. It is rather depressing to play with an untuned guitar. For in this case, even the most beautiful pieces are unpleasant to hear. On the contrary, it is a real pleasure to play on a well tuned instrument. There are several ways to tune your guitar, we will study three of them.

For a beginner it is the best method by far, for the two others require a little practice. It is thus, the one I recommend most, especially since a tuner is not expensive… On the tuner, choose the string you want to tune (note that some tuners make the selection themselves). Then, check on the tuner if the note is too low (the indicator moves to the left) or too high (the indicator moves to the right). The perfect tuning is reached when the indicator stays in the middle, on the zero (see figure I).

Tune the A string using the tuning fork, then check the other strings by comparing them two by two (play the frets indicated on figure II).

Pick up your phone, using the dialing tone tune the A string, then check the other strings by comparing them two by two (see figure III).

Exercises # 2 & 3: the arpeggio is identical except that the thumb of the right hand plays either on the second low string (A) or on the third string (D). The playing instructions are identical to those in exercise 1.

Exercises # 4, 5 & 6 are played with only three fingers (the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the right hand), the left hand still does not play. They will prepare you for the “Anatole” with arpeggios in the following lesson of “How to play the guitar – Volume I”.

The B minor shape We’re going to put your first finger to work on this chord. Your first finger has the job of covering the second fret, from the fifth to first strings (we don’t play the sixth string). Next, put your third finger on the fourth fret of the fourth string. Then, add your fourth pinky finger to the fourth fret of the third string. Lastly, place your second finger on the third fret of the second string. Got it? Now, strum the chord, and try not to get upset when most of the notes don’t ring clearly.
This is a tough chord at first, no doubt about it! You’re going to have to have patience, it WILL sound good soon, but it’s going to take some work. Here are some tips that will help you: Very slightly bend your first finger. A straight and rigid finger is not what we’re looking for. Roll the finger back slightly, so that more of the side of the index finger closest to the thumb is in contact with the strings. Try slightly pulling the body of the guitar towards your body, using the arm of your picking hand. Also gently pull the neck towards you with your fretting hand. This makes fretting barre chords somewhat easier.

Movable chord

One of the greatest things about the B minor chord shape is that it is a “movable chord”. This means that, unlike the chords we’ve learned so far, we can slide the same shape around to different frets to create different minor chords. The note we’re interested in is the note on the fifth string. Whatever note your finger is playing on the fifth string is the type of minor chord it is. If you were to slide the chord up the neck, so that your first finger was at the fifth fret, you’d be playing a D minor chord, since the note on the fifth fret of the fifth string is D. THIS is why learning the note names on the sixth and fifth strings are so important. We’ll be getting into different movable chords in the next lesson.

Hold the shape of the B minor chord, and play strings one at a time. Correct any notes that aren’t ringing clearly. Try moving from other chords to a B minor chord, then back to other chords. This will be a slow and difficult process at first. Keep trying! Try playing different minor chords by moving the B minor shape around to different frets (eg. try playing C# minor, F minor, G minor, Bb minor, etc.) Do NOT play the sixth string when playing a B minor chord. Pay careful attention to this.

Begin by finding a flat surface on which to lay the guitar. A table works well, but the floor works in a pinch. Position yourself in front of the instrument, with the guitar’s sixth string closest to you. Completely slacken the sixth (lowest) string of the guitar, by turning the tuner. If you’re unsure of which direction to turn the tuner to slacken the string, pluck the string before you begin turning the tuner. The pitch of the note should get lower as you slacken the string.

Once the string has been completely slackened, uncoil it from the tuning peg at the head of the guitar. Next, remove the other end of the string from the bridge by removing the sixth string bridge pin from the bridge of the guitar. Commonly, bridge pins will provide some resistance when trying to remove them. If this is the case, use a pair of pliers and gently coax the bridge pin out of the bridge.

Discard the old string. Using your cloth, wipe down any areas of the guitar you can’t reach with the sixth string on the instrument. If you have guitar polish, now is the time to use it.

It is important to note that some guitarists remove all strings from their guitar at once and then replace them. I highly advise against this procedure. The six tuned strings of a guitar produce a great deal of tension on the neck of the instrument, which is a good thing. Removing all six strings at once drastically changes this tension, which many guitar necks don’t react well to. Sometimes, when all six strings are replaced, the strings will sit impossibly high off the fretboard. Change your strings one at a time to avoid a variety of issues.

If you’re a fan of rock music, and want to learn to play rock guitar, starting on electric guitar is a logical choice. If, however, you’re a fan of acoustic music, and want to learn to strum your favorite songs, an acoustic guitar is probably best for you. The importance of the above philosophy can’t be stressed enough. If you get stuck with the wrong type of guitar, you’re going to have much less motivation to pick it up and play it regularly.

Note to parents: this same principle applies when picking out a guitar for your child. Try to realistically assess what they’dlike best, as opposed to what you’dlike them to play. Their progress will be noticably better when playing a guitar they like.

Ease of Learning

Depending on your personality type, this might either play a major factor in deciding which guitar to start on, or might be irrelevant. Some people find if they don’t see results quickly, they get discouraged, and lose interest in playing guitar altogether. If you think you (or the person you’re buying for) are one of those people, an electric guitar is probably the instrument to start on. Electric guitars have smaller bodies, smaller necks, and it’s much easier to press down the strings. Essentially, you can start playing the *basics* of guitar much more quickly and easily on an electric guitar, than you can on an acoustic. Having said that, there are a few knobs and buttons on an electric guitar that can complicate using it somewhat.

Budget Considerations

Understandably, paying a whole lot for a first guitar isn’t very desirable, especially if you’re not even sure if playing guitar is something you (or whomever you’re buying for) will stick with. For this reason, acoustic guitars are more often the choice for a first instrument, since they tend to be slightly less expensive. Electric guitars require the purchase of an amplifier, and a guitar cable, so they can end up costing a little more. If you want to learn on an electric guitar, but budget is a serious issue, many guitar stores offer starter electric guitar/amp packages at very reasonable prices.

Making the Decision

Now I’ve given you some things to consider, it’s time for you to decide which type of guitar is best suited for you, or for whomever you’re buying for. Let’s summarize – if the person in question frustrates easily, or listens to and wants to play “hard rock” music, definitely think electric guitar. If, however, the person in question wants to learn songs to sing along to, and can handle a slightly steeper learning curve, then an acoustic guitar might be in order.

The quest for the ultimate tone is a constant struggle for guitarists. I’ve yet to meet a guitarist who is wholly satisfied with every aspect of their sound. Coaxing a great tone out of your guitar and amplifier is certainly a frustrating experience for most of us – even with great equipment, that “perfect sound” always seems to be just out of our grasp. Let’s examine several ways of changing your guitar sound without shelling out wads of coin for a new axe or amp.

One of the cheapest and easiest ways to tinker with your guitar sound is to experiment with different sizes and gauges of picks. Using a very thin pick produces a sound drastically different than using a heavy one. Many jazz guitarists tend to favour using heavy picks (1.5 or 2 millimeters) because it tends to thicken and darken up their sound somewhat. Thinner gauged picks tend to give guitarist’s a brighter sound, although it tends to produce tone with a shade less depth (I personally can’t stand really thin picks, but some people swear by them, as they feel it gives them much more speed). When choosing picks, be sure they are well-made, and the edges of the pick aren’t unintentionally rough, as this can interfere with your ability to play notes cleanly. I have found Jim Dunlop picks to be of excellent quality, but there are many excellent brands of guitar picks available.

Another easy way to alter your sound is via experimenting with different string gauges. A guitar strung with extra light gauge strings will sound completely different than the same guitar strung with medium or heavy gauge strings. The String Anatomy 101 website offers explanations of different types of strings. Making little adjustments to your guitar’s setup, such as clamping down floating bridges, or adjusting pickup height, can also make a world of difference in the sound your guitar produces. If you own a Stratocaster, the Strat Tips website offers some great tips on how to go about making these adjustments, and what the “optimal” settings are. You’ll find a ton of other ideas for tweaking your axe in the Guitar Repair Archive.

If none of the above procedures offer a tonal solution drastic enough for you, you can always consider replacing a pickup or two. The problem is, there are hundreds of electric guitar pickups on the market, and it’s hard to guess what a pickup will sound like in your guitar until you’ve already bought it and put it in. The Harmony Central site offers an excellent resource; the Electric Guitar Pickup Database, a collection of reviews by guitarists, on specific pickups. The archive is huge, and chances are, you’ll find at least several reviews of the pickup you’re considering for purchase.

Sometimes, the best way to go about finding a sound that is right for you is to emulate someone else’s guitar sound, and then, over time, make adjustments to it. Use the archive of famous guitarist guitar set-ups on this site to experiment with other guitarist’s sounds, and try to evaluate what you do and don’t like about each.

This should get you off to a great start in re-examining the sound you’re getting out of your guitar. Remember – much of your guitar tone comes not from the guitar itself, but from the fingers in your fretting hand, and in the way you strike the strings with your pick. Adjusting the amount of pressure you’re exerting, the type of vibrato you’re using, the part of your finger that comes into contact with the string, etc., can affect your guitar tone almost as much, if not more, than any of the above suggestions. With so much attention focused on which guitars give you which sound, which guitars look the nicest, and which play the best, the lowly guitar amplifier is often ignored, especially by novice guitarists. Which is a big mistake for guitarists looking to find a great sound. The fact of the matter is; a sub-par guitar played through a great amp can still sound fairly decent, but even the best guitars, when played through a bad amplifier, sound awful.

If you’re considering buying your first amplifier, price will obviously be one of your primary concerns. Guitar amplifiers range in price from under $100, to multiple thousands of dollars. A common choice for first amplifiers are the very small and basic 15-watt amps such as the Fender Frontman 15G, which provide a low cost solution to amplifying the guitar. When asked by students and parents, I strongly discourage the purchase of amplifiers like these, for several reasons. First of all, the sound of these amps tends to be tolerable at best, and often sound much, much, worse. Newer guitarists will often become frustrated, complaining that “nothing I ever play sounds good”, not fully realizing that it is the equipment, and not what they are playing, that is causing the music to sound inferior. These small amps also don’t provide a great deal of volume, which can present a problem. In the beginning, the musical growth of guitar players is quite staggering, and it won’t be long before many newer guitarists are ready to start playing with other musicians. Many of these small amplifiers have a hard time being heard above the volume of a drummer, which renders them useless in those situations.

This isn’t meant to imply that you need to spend $1000 on your first guitar amplifier. But, by setting your sites above the cheapest, smallest amplifier in the store, you’ll certainly end up with an amp that will serve your needs for a much longer period of time. The Fender Pro Junior is a great, low-cost tube amplifier that you’ll sometimes even see being used by professional guitarists. What the Pro Junior lacks in control (no EQ, no reverb), it more than makes up for in tone and sound quality (read the full review of the Pro Junior).

There are a few things I’ll generally look for in modestly priced amplifiers; at least a 3-band EQ ( low, mid, and high), a clean channel and an “overdrive” channel, reverb, and possibly some sort of “presence” control. Another thing to be aware of is the existence of two types of amplifiers; tube and transistor. The BuddyHawke.com site has provided a relatively simple explanation of the difference between the two. I personally almost universally prefer tube amps, but this is something you’ll have to listen to, and decide for yourself. Tube amps are almost always more problematic, and tend to be more expensive.

When shopping for amps, be sure to try many out before you buy one. Play the same guitar through each amp when experimenting in the store. Make sure you spend a good deal of time with each amp; playing them at loud and quiet volumes, with and without overdrive, experimenting with the versatility of sound each amp provides. Do not be afraid to bring your guitar into the store and try it out with the amps you are considering. Try researching specific amps you are interested in on the net, using the Harmony Central Amp Database,. One last thing to be aware of; despite what they may lead you to believe, you can, and should negotiate with music store employees in regards to the price of their merchandise. I have found that with a bit of prompting, I can get at least a 10% discount on guitars and amps not on sale, and often even more.

Try this exercise: Choose two chords you know. You will be moving back and forth between these two chords. Play the first chord eight times (strumming evenly), and then, without breaking the rhythm of your strumming, quickly move to the next chord, and play that chord eight times.

Did you need to pause while switching chords? If so, let’s try and examine what the problem is. Try the following, without strumming the guitar: Put your fingers back in position to play the first chord. Now, try and move quickly to the second chord, and study your fingers while doing so. Chances are, one (or a few) of your fingers will come way off the fretboard, and perhaps hover in mid-air while you try to decide where each finger should go. This happens, not because of any lack of technical ability, but because you haven’t mentally prepared yourself for switching chords.

Now, try fretting the first chord again. Without actually moving to the second chord, VISUALIZE playing this second chord shape. Picture in your mind, finger by finger, how to most efficiently move to the next chord. Only after you’ve done this should you switch chords. If some fingers continue to pause, or hover in mid air while moving to the next chord, back up and try again. Also, concentrate on “minimum motion” – commonly, beginners bring their fingers very far off the fretboard while switching chords; this is unnecessary. Spend five minutes going back and forth between the two chords, visualizing, then moving. Pay attention to any small, unneccessary movements your fingers make, and eliminate them. Although this is easier said than done, your hard work and attention to detail will start paying off quickly. Good luck!

String Changing Tutorial

Take a look at the strings of your guitar. What sort of shape are they in? Are they discolored? Rusty? Are all six strings present and accounted for? If you answered no to any of these questions, or if it’s been several months since you put new strings on your guitar, it’s time for a string change. New strings make your guitar sound brighter, and generally make it easier to play.

How Often Should I Change My Strings?

Just like brake pads on a car, guitar strings wear out with use. Old guitar strings often behave badly – they’ll lose tuning more quickly, sound less “bright”, and give you problems with intonation. Old guitar strings also break, often during the most inopportune moment. Be sure to head into any live playing situation with new strings on your guitar, and several more sets of strings packed in your case, should you break a string during performance.

When I’m playing my acoustic guitar a lot, I’ll change the strings at least every two weeks (more than that if I’m using it for gigs). It’s probably not necessary for beginners to be quite as diligent with keeping new strings on their guitar, but changing strings a minimum of every couple months is a very good idea.

What Sort of Guitar Strings Should I Buy?

Everyone has an opinion on which strings are best, but let’s put aside the discussion of guitar string manufacturers for a moment, and discuss the type of strings needed for your guitar. If you own an acoustic guitar, you need “acoustic guitar strings”. If you own a classical guitar, you need “classical guitar strings” or “nylon strings”. An electric guitar needs “electric guitar strings”. And a bass guitar needs… wait for it… “bass guitar strings”.

You also need to consider the gauge (thickness) of strings you’d like. This is where personal preference comes into play, but for beginners, I recommend starting with “medium” gauge strings, and varying from that as you develop a personal preference. An oversimplified rule of thumb is thicker strings provide better tone, but are harder to play.

If you’re intimidated by the thought of buying a set of strings from a guitar store, don’t be. Simply march in, and say “I’d like a set of XXXXX (brand name – eg. D’Addario, Fender, Dean Markley) medium gauge acoustic guitar strings please.” Prices vary from store to store, but a set of acoustic strings shouldn’t set you back more than $8 (several brands, like the excellent Elixir strings, cost more, but the merits of these products belongs in another article).

Every note on the guitar has a name, represented by a letter. The names of each of these notes is important; guitarists need to know where to find these notes on their instrument, in order to read music.

The image to the left illustrates the names of the six open strings on the guitar.

The strings, from sixth to first (thickest to thinnest) are named E, A, D, G, B and E again.

In order to help you memorize this, try using the accompanying phrase “Every Adult Dog Growls, Barks, Eats” to keep the order straight.

Try saying the string names out loud, one by one, as you play that string. Then, test yourself by pointing to a random string on your guitar, then trying to name that string as quickly as possible. In following lessons, we’ll be learning the names of the notes on various frets on the guitar, but for now, we’ll just stick with the open strings.

There are many different aspects of guitar basics that you need to know. You will need to know the different parts of the guitar. You will most likely need to know how to read music, and how to tune your guitar. You will need to know different chords as well. Part of knowing the different chords are being able to learn guitar scale as well.

If you learn guitar scales, you will be able to write your own guitar music so much quicker than you would if you were not familiar with guitar scales. Every great musician had to start somewhere-and I guarantee that each and every musician began by learning the basic guitar skills, which includes when they learn guitar scales. Let’s take a look at what you are getting yourself into if you decide to learn guitar scale.

First Thing’s First – What Is A Musical Scale?

A musical scale is a group of notes with defined intervals in between them. A scale can consist of any group of notes; however, some scales are more commonly used in Western music. Thus, if you decide to learn guitar scales, then you will need to be more familiar with these particular ones. An example of a common guitar scale is C major. There are two types of steps in a musical scale-a whole step and a half step. A half step is one interval between notes.

A whole step is equivalent to two half steps, so it is two intervals between notes. If you learn guitar scale, a whole step will be equivalent to two frets, while a half step will be equivalent to one fret. If you learn scales, you will also need to know about the roots of a scale. The root of a scale is what note it begins on.

This information may seem like a lot to remember, but you won’t regret your decision to learn musical scale. As you are on that stage, rocking out on your guitar, perhaps you will reflect back to your guitar lessons long ago and be thankful that you made the decision to learn guitar scale.

Now, pick up your guitar, and hold it so the back of the body of the instrument comes in contact with your stomach/chest, and the bottom of the neck runs parallel to the floor. The thickest string on the guitar should be the closest to your face, while the thinnest should be closest to the floor. If this isn’t the case, turn the guitar the in other direction. Typically, a right-handed person will hold the guitar so the headstock points to the left, whereas a left-handed person will hold the guitar so the headstock points to the right. (NOTE: to play the guitar as a lefty would, you will need a left-handed guitar.)

When playing the guitar sitting down, the body of the guitar will rest on one of your legs. In most styles of guitar playing, the guitar will rest on the leg farthest away from the headstock. This means, a person playing the guitar in a right-handed fashion will typically rest the guitar on his/her right leg, while someone playing the guitar in a lefty manner will rest it on their left leg. (NOTE: proper classical guitarist technique dictates the exact OPPOSITE of the above, but for this lesson, let’s stick to our initial explanation)

Next, concentrate on your “fretting hand” (the hand closest to the neck of the guitar, when sitting in proper position). The thumb of your fretting hand should rest behind the neck of the guitar, with your fingers in a slightly curled position, poised above the strings. It is extremely important to keep these fingers curled at the knuckles, except when specifically instructed not to do so.

Guitarists are a unique breed. Chances are, if you play guitar, you are either self-taught, or have taken a small number of lessons via a friend or guitar teacher. If you were a pianist, however, you would have learned the instrument through years of private study, which would include both music theory lessons, and heavy focus on sight reading.

Nothing wrong with taking the more informal approach to learning music, but it does create some inherent problems when it comes to laborious duties like learning to read music. Learning to sight read takes a reasonable amount of work, without immediate benefit, and it is these sort of skills that self-taught musicians tend to avoid.

It’s never too late to learn to read music… if you want to get serious about a career in the music industry, it really is essential. However, guitarists have created their own method of music notation, guitar tablature which, while admittedly flawed, provides a simple and easy to read way of sharing music with other guitarists.

Knowing most of the basics about a guitar will make learning how to play the guitar easier; the basic parts are the headstock, the nut, the neck, the body, the sound hole, the bridge, the strings and the keys. Most of these parts are pretty self explanatory; the strings run from the bridge over the sound hole, up the neck, are secured by the nut, and attached to the tuning keys to achieve the desired sounds.

The next difference is between the types of guitar, there are several, however most novice guitar players would only be concerned with the two very basic types, the acoustic and electric. When learning to play any instrument, and not least the guitar, it is fairly common to imagine yourself in a position where you play to be heard by a crowd. As soon as you got up to play, you will be heading back to your seat before you know it. And when someone asks you afterwards how you feel it went, you’ll have to ask them the same question.

Even the people who seem like they were born to perform remember very little about their first gig. Adrenaline is a stimulant that does not need to be drank or smoked, it will course through your veins regardless. And it is a heady one, too.

Sometimes we think that readers with visual impairment or not able to read guitar music at all and we believe this is part of our personality. But in reality, only the guitar is not. First, start by selecting the octaves in the partition of the guitar. Then you can place your fingers correctly on the first octave. Then you can play two octaves on the same fixed rope. The last step is to play two octaves simultaneously on different sets of strings. It takes time and practice, but it will help to develop a guitar sound.

Actually playing the guitar is like a mind game. Yes of course.Why? First of all, I will explain somethings . Perhaps you, your friends, or anyone even me, when learning how to play guitar always meet obstacles. I would say, you will meet constraints, for sure. And many more factor that can take effect.

From many obstacles that we faced in playing guitar, we often feel frustrated, right? Or at least that's what me and my students experienced. Some of them have said, I'm not talented, I'm busy, I've tried but still can not play with right, I'm not good at playing the guitar might be easier to play other instruments and bla bla.

And when they meet these constraints, they become lazy and they finally surrendered. It is unfortunate that when learning something but not completed, or at least not yet achieved what we desired.

3. Discipline and practice. If you have a goal, of course you have to be discipline. Playing guitar in addition to the notion of theory, are required practice. Practice and practice. Create a schedule for practice session , you do not have to have time off for hours every day just to practice playing the guitar. You can divide it three times a day, and between 10-15 minutes each session. If you have a goal then you must have discipline, because you want to be able how to play your guitar fast, and get advance.

This was pretty much the combine of the first two methods. It was like you have private guitar teacher in your room, but the difference is you paying only once. You can learn guitar through your computer and the course is very professional and suites for all skill levels.

My favorite method of all the three was the third one. I've find out that that my skills improved during the course's progress. My strumming improved dramatically, not to mention the hammer-ons and the pull-offs tricks.
I remember specially that I had particularly problem with palm muting before this course but now I'm starting to get it.

Now after 6 months I'm using it I happy with my decision so much that this is the main reason for writing this article – to help you guys, who don't know which guitar course to choose, take the decision.

When you are carrying a guitar around everywhere with you, and add to that an amp, then you will get a workout even if you don’t like the gym. He told me Acoustic Electric Guitar is a good instrument and this is the right age to start with. After about a week dad took me to one of his friend who eventually has a music school and Guitar is also taught there. Steven uncle told me if you are going to join my school I would suggest you to buy an Acoustic Guitar. Not only that it is cost effective but also it is also good
for learner.

I joined the class within next 4 to 5 days and learned guitar there for more than a year. Later I joined two more schools one in Manhattan and the other in Special School of music both in New York. For last 10 years I am playing a Gibson Electric Guitar. This one is amazing of its type. Now I too have joined in a music school and specially take care of the beginner to start with Guitar.

To play a basic Blues Scale that will enable you to easily learn guitar solos, do these steps:

TRY THIS BLUES SCALE SOLO EXERCISE 1. place your fingers in this position: your first finger presses down on all six strings, your second finger on the fifth string, your third finger on the third, fourth and fifth strings and your fourth finger on the first, second, third and sixth string. 2. Play the scale forwards and backwards by alternate picking: first pick downwards and then upwards. 3. Be sure that you are playing each note clearly. Fool around a bit to challenge yourself.

Once you’ve mastered the Blues Scale, you can start to learn guitar solos by using the different notes you’ve learned from the scale (notes strung together in a pleasing way are called licks).

SOME COOL IDEAS FOR LEARNING SOLOS 1. You might want to learn different positions of the various scales so you can have more options in creating solos. 2. You can also begin experimenting with various techniques to make your licks sound better, including slides, vibratos and half-step bends. 3. Another idea is to look up licks online and try playing with those. 4. Personally, this is my favorite. And it’s the thing I did over and over and over again. Just start attempting to play solo with an accompaniment; you can readily download 12-bar blues audio files that you can play along with.

When improvising licks, you should avoid the common pitfall of playing too many notes. Keep in mind that the best guitarists do not want to impress their audience with their virtuosity, but seek to communicate feeling using their playing.

Let’s start this off by talking about keys and major scales in particular.

Recall that major scales have a formula ( 1 + 1 + 1/2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1/2)

There are also rules concerning the construction of these things:

1. You must use every letter of the musical alphabet ( ABCDEFG ). You cannot skip a letter. Ever.

2. You must use the major scale formula.

3. You must never mix sharps and flats in the same scale. A major scale will have sharps in it, or flats in it, or none of either.

So, if I wanted to construct an A major scale, I would start off with rule number 1 — Use every letter.

A B C D E F G.

Now it becomes a matter of whether or not there are any sharps or flats. So let’s apply the formula:

1 step above A is B

1 step above B is C#

1/2 step above C# is D

1 step above D is E

1 step above E is F#

1 step above F# is G#

1/2 step above G# is A

So my A major scale is: A B C# D E F# G# A (There are 3 sharps in this key C#, F# and G#)

Most of your “pop keys” will not have more than 5 sharps, but what if I’m in the key of G#? Let’s construct this headache of a scale:

1. Use every letter. I will start by using G# because I know that that is the key. I also know that I will be using sharps and not flats because I cannot violate the rule that concerns mixing sharps and flats. But at this point I don’t know where these are so:

Rule number 1 — Use every letter. G# A B C D E F G#

Rule number 2 — Apply formula ( 1 1 1/2 1 1 1 1/2 )

1 step above G# is A#

1 step above A# is B#

1/2 step above B# is C##

1 step above C## is D##

1 step above D## is E##

1 step above E## is F##

1/2 step above F## is G#

G# A# B# C## D## E## F## G#

Look at all of the pretty double sharps! What’s up with that and how did they get there?

In truth, these guys are a pain for any musician. It forces even the best and most cultured musicians to “think fast” (as you can imagine). But they are not hard to understand if you know what a sharp (#) really does.

A sharp (#) raises a note 1/2 step. That is the definition of a sharp. So, for example a C## is a C raised a half step twice.

Now let’s look at the Chromatic Scale:

A A#/Bb B C C#/Db D D#/Eb E F F#/Gb G G#/Ab A

Recall that this baby is a 1/2 step scale. That is, the numeric distance between each and every note in this scale is 1/2 step.

Now, what does a sharp do? It raises a note 1/2 step.

That means that if I wanted to (I wouldn’t, by the way) I COULD express a D as A##### (D raised a 1/2 step 5 times)

1/2 step up from A is A# (raise number 1)

1/2 step up from A# is B (raise number 2)

1/2 step up from B is C (raise number 3)

1/2 step up from C is C# (raise number 4)

1/2 step up from C# is D (raise number 5)

Fortunately you will never, ever see this to this extent — it’s too demented even for classical music.

But you will see double sharps on occasion.

So going back to the despised G# major scale

G# A# B# C## D## E## F## G#

A B# is really a C, but because of the rules of major scales it has to be represented as a B#.

A C## is really a D, but because of that rule, it has to be represented as a C##.

A D## is really an E.

An E## is really an F# (This one’s fun!)

An F## is really a G

So, if you have the misfortune of seeing a piece of music in the key of G#, you might run across an E##m7 chord — which is really F#m7!

Now ain’t that special?

Again, you may play for years before you are forced to deal with something like this on a practical level (and certainly not to this extent. A piece of music will be written in Ab rather than G#). But sooner or later you will, so it’s important that you understand what’s going on.

Now dealing with double flats is the same problem — only in reverse. The definition of a flat is to lower a note 1/2 step.Double flats are far less common though. If you can understand double sharps, you won’t have much of a problem understanding double flats.

About ten years ago, this was the best way to learn the guitar. No other option even came close. You would meet with an instructor; go over the curriculum, cost and schedule. After discussing the schedule and the cost, your teacher is going to show you how to properly hold your guitar. They are going to teach you the names of the parts of the guitar, and show you how to play chords. You will be able to know where to place your fingers on strings and what amount of force to use to make sure a clean sound comes out.

Private instruction does not come cheap in any shape or form. And it is something that you should be aware of. When I was taking these lessons I had to pay $40/hr. Time is another issue when taking private lessons. There will be times when you are having problems understanding the lesson, so you have to wait till the next week to see your instructor so he/she can explain it to you. That’s a waste of your money and time, if you ask me. In today’s world, this type of instruction just seems outdated. So what do you do if you need a cheaper alternative to learn how to play guitar?This brings me to another subject.

Online Video Guitar Lessons For Beginners

These are becoming very popular today. I was very impressed with the amount of detail they put into it. The lessons are shown in multiple different angles, which makes it very easy for you to see on where to place your fingers and how to play different chords on your guitar. This works well, since you’ll be able to see on how your hands look from your point of view, which makes it very easy for you to learn and understand the lessons. Also, you have the option of choosing from a variety of talented instructors. You can get an instructor that specializes in the type of music that you like. And if you’re a fan of “rock”, wouldn’t you prefer to have a teacher who is specialized in playing rock?

Also, it’s nice that you have the control of how often and when to play the lessons. You can play them over and over again, until you fully understand the technique. Much easier than having to wait till next week for your instructor to explain it to you. So, what about the cost? How expensive are these lessons? This is one of the biggest advantages when learning guitar online. Most lessons cost $12 – $19 a month. That’s it. That’s less than what you’d pay for just one private lesson!

PLAY THIS EXERCISE
1. Pick a fret on that string and play the note.
2. Then move up three frets and play that note.
3. Move up two frets, play; move up another two frets and play.
4. Move up another three frets and play.
5. Finally, move up another two frets and play; this note should be the octave of the first note played..

Once you’ve mastered this pattern you can use it to play the minor pentatonic scale anywhere on your guitar. You will also use this pattern to play the major pentatonic scale, but will begin on the second note of the pattern.

When you use major scales to learn lead guitar scales , you will be using all seven notes rather than just the five of the pentatonic scale. Keep in mind that you should always keep your fretting fingers in the right position when playing major scales. One technique for learning major scales is to play three notes per string; doing so will also increase the speed of your playing once you’ve mastered it. Here’s how it works….

CHECK OUT THIS LITTLE TRICK
1. Begin with the sixth string, use the first, third and fourth fingers for fretting and position them separated by one fret.
2. Strum downwards, then upwards and then downwards again.
3. Repeat with the fifth string but play up, then down and then up again.
4. When you move to the fourth string, shift your first finger one fret downwards but keep the other fingers in the same position;
5. Stay in the same position for the third string, then on the second string,
6. Shift again with the first finger moving one fret downward, the third finger two frets downward and the fourth finger one fret below that.
7. Play and maintain the same position for the last string.

The first problem is that many left handed people try to play the guitar with their right hand. This can cause not only a lot of discomfort, but can really hold back even the most talented of guitarists. It is basically doing something unnatural, and keep in mind that learning the guitar takes patience even when you are using the proper hand!

Many lefties will make adjustments to their guitars to make it suitable for playing. The fist thing they do is reverse the order of the strings, so that the E string, or thickest string, is on top of the guitar. The bridge and nut, the pieces that hold the string on, will also need to be turned upside down to accommodate lefties.

To avoid making these modifications, you could always buy a left handed guitar. However, these guitars can be significantly higher in price, as they are harder to find and not as heavily manufactured as their righty counterparts. So be sure to do some price shopping before making your final selection. Yet another challenge is finding chord charts specifically for lefties. While it is possible, it does take a little research, as most chord charts are made for righties. Luckily, you can find some popular books for lefties on Amazon or in most local book stores.

The challenges of playing lefty can be somewhat of a minor hindrance to most burgeoning guitar players. However, keep in mind that many famous lefty guitarists such as Kurt Kobain and Paul McCartney never let this stop them. In fact there are dozens of famous lefty guitarists who have proven that which hand you play with, isn’t a detriment to your playing skills.

An important aspect of learning to play electric guitar is how you are going to be holding the guitar during your long hours of practice. If you do not pay attention to this stuff now, you could end up with back, neck and shoulder problems later from straining your muscles and skeleton.

Now you have your guitar, and of course a decent amplifier. A practice amp is good for use when playing near loved ones if you want to remain loved yourself. With cheap electric guitars, you have quite a few options. A lot of people assume that the only way to go is to buy an all-in-one beginning guitar kit, but this is not the case. The electric guitar is probably the most popular instrument in America. As such, people buy and sell them all the time. You can find a used musical instrument that is still in pretty good shape. It helps to take someone along who knows what they are doing. You need to understand whether the frets are lined up properly, whether the neck is warped, and a lot of other things that you might not know how to evaluate as a beginner. Pawn shops can be risky business, and used musical instrument stores are not always reputable.

Of course, you can buy cheap electric Guitars without buying them used. A lot of the main manufacturers produce beginner lines that are still pretty good. My personal favorite is the Epiphone LP Special II Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar.

Epiphone guitars are made by the same people who produce Gibsons, but they are a whole lot cheaper. The quality is still good – they just aren’t as fancy. I know some professional players who still use beginner Epiphones, so they are well regarded.

There are a few other strategies to consider when you are buying cheap electric guitars. I have a friend who swears by factory seconds. Factory seconds are new guitars that were somehow slightly damaged in the factory. Usually the damage is simply cosmetic – they have a ding on the body somewhere that looks a little bit ugly. If you don’t mind a bit of cosmetic imperfection, this is the way to go. You still get a new electric guitar, but with substantial savings.

Bass Guitar Cases

The first thing you will want to do is protect your new investment.  This requires a sturdy bass guitar case.  Cases come in various styles and materials.  The lower-end cases are very thin and don’t offer much protection if you plan on toting your bass around town.  There are sturdier cases which are molded and padded on the inside.  These cases have a hard shell and the padding keeps the bass secure.  I’d highly recommend a molded case if you will be doing a lot of traveling.

Extra Bass Strings

Bass guitar strings are relatively sturdy but it doesn’t hurt to keep some spare strings handy.  There are several types of bass strings available to include flatwound, roundwound, and groundwound.

Bass Guitar Straps

Depending on the bass you purchase, it may already come with a strap included.Of course there are various types of straps to choose from as well.  The most popular guitar straps are usually made of leather or suede.  Many are often woven and come in a variety of colors to suit your tastes.  If you’re not into the fancy straps, you can always choose between vinyl and polyester.

When I had been playing for about a year, I got sick of my guitar, but I didn’t really have money for another one. It wasn’t a very good model, and it didn’t sound great in the hands of inexperienced player. When one of my friends suggested trying some different guitar strings, I thought he was being silly. I had tried a few different acoustic guitar string brands, and had not noticed any difference. He told me to buy myself some high-quality Martin Guitar Strings and listen again. When I did, I was blown away. They really did sound warmer, brighter, and all around fuller.

That sound was great for me for a while. I have never had anything but good things to say about Martin Guitar Strings.

The problem was that my guitar was a little bit tinny. The Martin strings were too bright for the particular axe that I was using, So I knew that I had to experiment more. I wanted dark guitar strings with a much mellower, lower pitched sound. I was playing my guitar mostly for accompaniment, so I didn’t need it to project out all that much.

When I finally found the perfect set of acoustic strings, I was absolutely overjoyed. They were made by a local manufacturer who hand wound them. Hand wound guitar strings are a little bit expensive, but if you find really good ones they are more than worth it. Unfortunately, he doesn’t make the strings anymore, but fortunately I stockpiled enough for several years to come. I practice using Martin strings still, but I have my special strings waiting in a case for shows. By saving them and using them sparingly, I should be able to make them last for as long as I need them. By that point, maybe I will have bought a better guitar.

Learn to master the guitar basics

Mastering guitar basics means being able to play in all keys. Being able to transpose any song to any other key – on the spot preferably.

Did you know that 95% of guitarists don’t learn and master the basics? Oh yes, they mean to get around to it, but they hardly ever do.

Why is that? Well, it’s because they think it’s boring, complicated and too much hard work. And most of all – no fun! And mostly they were right. Well, it needn’t be that way. Mastering guitar basics can be a lot of fun if you go about it in a methodical set-by-step way.

How to master the guitar basics

There are 6 basic steps you need to follow:

1. Learn the names of all notes on all strings, one string at a time.
2. Learn how to construct a C Major scale. Basic must-know guitar theory. Easy stuff.
3. Learn how the chords of the major scale are made and what they are… their names etc. C Dm Em F G Am Bdim. Learn basic chord construction.
4. Learn the triad patterns for the C major scale all over the fret board. Triads are simple 3-note chords. Easy and fun to learn and play.
5. Learn to play those triads with common chord progressions. Learn to play and apply the triads to the most common chord progressions that fit thousands and thousands of songs.
6. Learn to do step 5 in all keys.

Once you can do steps one to five in the key of C, it’s real easy to learn it for the other 11 major keys.

The good news: it’s much easier than you think. All the patterns are exactly the same as what you learn for C major. You don’t have to learn any new patterns. Cookie cutter stuff. It really is not hard at all. All you need is a methodical step-by-step method that makes sense and is easy and fun to use.

The standard method for holding a classical guitar is to sit down, place it across your left leg and, using a footstool, elevate your leg to a point where your guitar is at an approximately 30 degree angle to you.

It lets the guitar rest against your chest and legs, leaving both arms free to move without having to exert additional pressure and tension to hold it, and the guitar is placed in a position that will project the sound acoustically to the back of the room.

However, most guitarists who have learned to play without taking this position find this method very uncomfortable, and many experts in ergonomics say that this position places stress on your lower back.

The 90-Degree Method

In the 90-degree method, your feet should be flat on the floor, and your knees at an 90 degree angle to your feet. Your legs should be bent at a 90 degree angle to your knees, and your trunk should be at a 90 degree angle to your legs, bent at your hips. Your back should be straight, and your shoulders parallel to the ground.

Many people also find a guitar strap useful.

Try to keep your hand, wrist and forearm in a straight line. This correctly aligns the muscles and relaxes your hand position.

Make sure you can see the knuckles of both of your hands when you play. To do this you need to have a uniform curve in each ginger, and each hand needs to be in a midrange position. Bending the wrist on either hand tends to flex or extend the muscles, which will inhibit your playing technique.

Try to keep your left and moving parallel to the fingerboard, with your left-hand thumb on or near the center of the guitar neck in line between the index and middle finger.

Practice in front of a mirror during the first couple of times of playing the guitar so you can check your posture and hand positions until you feel comfortable.
