You can learn to play guitar right from the comfort of your own home. Once you learn how to play the guitar, you will also understand the concept of playing other musical instruments as well.
It is not difficult to learn to play the guitar. Like any other type of lesson, you have to take it one step at a time. The first thing that at home lessons will teach you is to get familiar with the guitar, understand how to tune the guitar and then learn the basic chords. A guitar is one of the easiest instruments to play. You can pick up a used guitar and get started with your at home lessons. With an electric guitar, you are putting out more money and also need an amplifier, but with an acoustic, it’s just you and the guitar.
By learning at home, you can see if you have a knack for this instrument and then move up to other guitars. You will get to know the sounds of the guitar as you play along with CD’s and DVD lessons in an at home program.
The most important concept you have to understand when you want to learn to play guitar, or any other instrument for that matter, is that you have to practice. Good musicians are those who have a passion for music and want to learn to play. The more you practice playing the guitar, the better you will become at mastering this instrument. If you really want to learn how to play the guitar, you can do so by using a learn at home lesson package.
Learn at home lesson packages cost a fraction of what you would expect to pay for guitar lessons at a local music shop. Instead of having to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars with private lessons, you can have your own private lessons, right in the comfort of your own home, and get expert training. You only need to purchase a guitar and an at -home guitar package to learn to play guitar and you will be on your way to being a guitarist. Whether or not you are a good guitarist is up to you and the time you invest in lessons, practice and learning to master the instrument.

Finding the Right Tone for You

The quest for the ultimate tone is a constant struggle for guitarists. I’ve yet to meet a guitarist who is wholly satisfied with every aspect of their sound. Coaxing a great tone out of your guitar and amplifier is certainly a frustrating experience for most of us – even with great equipment, that “perfect sound” always seems to be just out of our grasp. Let’s examine several ways of changing your guitar sound without shelling out wads of coin for a new axe or amp.
One of the cheapest and easiest ways to tinker with your guitar sound is to experiment with different sizes and gauges of picks. Using a very thin pick produces a sound drastically different than using a heavy one. Many jazz guitarists tend to favour using heavy picks (1.5 or 2 millimeters) because it tends to thicken and darken up their sound somewhat. Thinner gauged picks tend to give guitarist’s a brighter sound, although it tends to produce tone with a shade less depth (I personally can’t stand really thin picks, but some people swear by them, as they feel it gives them much more speed). When choosing picks, be sure they are well-made, and the edges of the pick aren’t unintentionally rough, as this can interfere with your ability to play notes cleanly. I have found Jim Dunlop picks to be of excellent quality, but there are many excellent brands of guitar picks available.
Another easy way to alter your sound is via experimenting with different string gauges. A guitar strung with extra light gauge strings will sound completely different than the same guitar strung with medium or heavy gauge strings. The String Anatomy 101 website offers explanations of different types of strings. For links to various string manufacturer’s websites, as well as online guitar string retailers, visit the guitar string links page on this site. (It should be noted that changing string gauges on a guitar generally neccesitates an intonation adjustment. You can learn more about how to do this by reading the Intonation FAQ.)
Making little adjustments to your guitar’s setup, such as clamping down floating bridges, or adjusting pickup height, can also make a world of difference in the sound your guitar produces. If you own a Stratocaster, the Strat Tips website offers some great tips on how to go about making these adjustments, and what the “optimal” settings are. You’ll find a ton of other ideas for tweaking your axe in the Guitar Repair Archive.
If none of the above procedures offer a tonal solution drastic enough for you, you can always consider replacing a pickup or two. The problem is, there are hundreds of electric guitar pickups on the market, and it’s hard to guess what a pickup will sound like in your guitar until you’ve already bought it and put it in. The Harmony Central site offers an excellent resource; the Electric Guitar Pickup Database, a collection of reviews by guitarists, on specific pickups. The archive is huge, and chances are, you’ll find at least several reviews of the pickup you’re considering for purchase.
Sometimes, the best way to go about finding a sound that is right for you is to emulate someone else’s guitar sound, and then, over time, make adjustments to it. Use the archive of famous guitarist guitar set-ups on this site to experiment with other guitarist’s sounds, and try to evaluate what you do and don’t like about each.
This should get you off to a great start in re-examining the sound you’re getting out of your guitar. Remember – much of your guitar tone comes not from the guitar itself, but from the fingers in your fretting hand, and in the way you strike the strings with your pick. Adjusting the amount of pressure you’re exerting, the type of vibrato you’re using, the part of your finger that comes into contact with the string, etc., can affect your guitar tone almost as much, if not more, than any of the above suggestions. Good luck!

Learning to Play Guitar – 3 Easy Acoustic Rock Songs
August 18, 2010 by Cyn

There have been some great rock tunes written on the acoustic guitar, and many of those are pretty darn easy to play for beginners as well.
I've assembled a list of 3 easy to play rock songs on the acoustic guitar. If you're just starting out so long as you know your major and minor chords you should be able to figure these out.
I've provided the chords you need to know for each song, and if you would like the exact pattern you can always look for the chord progression on a guitar tab website. The best way to learn them how ever is probably to listen to the songs a couple of times and then pick them out by ear.
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) – Green Day
I can still remember playing this song. There are a few variations of it floating around, some easier then others, but over all it's probably the easiest and most fun song on the list.
There are only four chords in the whole song: G, C, D and Em.
Listen to the song and I'm sure you'll be able to pick up your guitar after the first verse and chorus and begin to play along. This is also a great song to strum and sing at the same time if you're able to.
Patience – Guns N' Roses
Everyone who's a guitar fan loves a little GNR. This is one of the classics on their second album Lies. This is one of the only acoustic hits Guns N Roses had during their original career, not counting their recent come back.
You can play this song on the acoustic with only five different chords: C, G, D, A and Em.
There are several great tabs and chord sites which have the pattern out there but I believe if you listen to the song a couple of times you'll pick it up pretty quick knowing that those are the chords used.
About A Girl – Nirvana
I couldn't leave this song off the list since it's one of the first songs I learned to play on the acoustic guitar. Another easy one for beginners Kurt Cobain was never known for his complexity but rather his simplicity.
The best version of this song to learn was recorded on their live MTV unplugged concert in the early nineties. If you can get a hold of that version it's fantastic on the acoustic.
To play about a girl you'll need to know the chords: Em, G, C# and F#
This is another great song to sing and play if you can.

Learn How To Tune Your Guitar The Right Way

How To Tune Your Guitar The Right Way
Proper maintenance is important to any technical piece of equipment, all the way from vehicles down to instruments that you play. The guitar is no exception. One of the things that you must do on a regular basis is to tune the strings on your guitar.
Without doing this, they can stretch and the sound will be distorted. Tuning your guitar every so often will help prevent you from looking like an idiot in front of your friends whenever you are trying to impress them with your musical skills.
There is a standard, as there always seems to be, involved in guitar tuning and it is conveniently labeled the standard guitar tuning method. The standard involves tuning the strings from the thickest to the thinnest. The order should be E, A, D, G, B, E.
This method is the easiest methods because it is the easiest for tuning the most amounts of scales and chords. The way to start this method is with the E string. The E string is the thickest, and the least likely to fall short of tuning.
The A string is the next string that you should tune. The way to adjust the A string is to place your finger on the fret, pick the fifth and sixth strings while adjusting the fifth string tuning peg until the two notes sound the same. The D string comes next in line.
The way to find the proper D string note is to find the A string that is located just behind the fifth fret. You then turn the fourth string to that note. Tune your G string to the note that rings when you put the first finger on your left hand just behind the fifth fret.
The B string should sound like when your first finger of your left hand is placed behind the forth fret. You should recognize that the tuning of the B string is the only one in the method that uses the fourth fret and not the fifth. Last is the E string which is where you place the first finger of, you guessed it, your left hand behind the fifth fret on the B string.
There are other ways to tune your guitar, but they can get more complicated. You can use an online guitar tuner. You can customize these tuners or you can use the standard method in order to hear how the note is supposed to sound. There are many sites that you can visit in order to find an online tuner, but when you find a site that you like, you should bookmark it in your favorites so that you can easily find it the next time.
If you don’t have a keen ear attuned to different pitches, you might want to invest in an electric tuner. With this device you can look at a tuning monitor to see how off-tune each string on your guitar is. Then, by following the needle on the display, you can tune each string on your guitar according to the reading given on the electric tuner.
Even if you do have a trained ear, electric tuners can come in handy if you’re trying to tune your equipment just before a gig. Noises and other distractions can keep your ear from creating just the right sound on your guitar strings.
If you’re experienced enough, you can tune your guitar by using piano notes. This is quite difficult to do though, especially if you’re not trained in tuning your guitar with this method. Experts and musicians who have been performing for years can also tune their instruments though harmonies and octaves, but this might only confuse the beginning guitar player.
If you’re unsure about your tuning abilities, it is best to just stick with the other methods, such as an electric tuner, to make sure that your strings are tuned to just the right pitch.
